The Tile Association Awards are the "Oscars" of the wall and floor tile industry. This year TTA received more nominations than ever before across the 21 awards. Listed below are the winners and finalists. They are the best in the industry.

Outstanding Contribution to the Industry

The remit for this highly coveted award is that the he or she has made a difference to the industry as a whole, not just within their own business environment. Bill Walters is well known to many within the industry and has very definitely made a difference on the technical front.

Winner Bill Walters

Working for Ceram (formerly British Ceramic Research Association) for 43 years Bill specialised in the performance and installation of ceramic tiles. He sits on British, European and International Standards Committees and has lectured widely in the UK and internationally. He is highly regarded as one of the UK's principal experts in testing methods for ceramic tiles and is a pioneer in testing the slip resistance of floor tiles.

Best Newcomer (Tile Fixing Trainee)

Winner - Chris Borlase of Wilson & Wylie Contracts Ltd

Chris has shown that he is not only a quality tiler, capable of taking on a variety of works, but also that he has organisational skills and good common sense. He has shown his quality of work on contracts such as AELTCC Wimbledon, Clissold Leisure Centre and Uxbridge Business Park.

Winner - Jonathan Davies of JD Tiling
Jonathan has an NVQ level 3 in wall and floor tiling, a CSCS Gold card and has also won the Medal of Excellence from City & Guilds in advanced computer aided engineering.

Best Use of Tile in a Small Construction Contract

Winner - Private pool in an old chapel in South Hams by Jonathan Davies, JD Tiling
The pool is a horizon type where the water sits right at the top edge. This project was probably one of the most testing jobs any tiler can be asked to do.

Best Use of Tile in a Large Construction Contract

Winner - Centre Court Redevelopment - All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon by Wilson & Wylie Contracts Ltd
The project was completed in June 2008, completely snag free, in plenty of time for the 2008 Championships. This was due to an effective working relationship between Wilson & Wylie and GallifordTry.

Winner - "The Forge", Westferry Road, London by Wilson & Wylie Contracts Ltd
This project, for Glenkerrin Homes, comprised of installing wall and floor tiles to the bathrooms, en-suites and kitchens in 128 flats. This project shows the high quality finish of Wilson & Wylie operatives and their versatility at being able to adapt between varying sizes and types of tiles.

The finalists were Dalston Square, East London by Pilkington's Tile Group Plc and The Hat Factory, Victoria Street St Albans by AG Ceramics Ltd

Best Technical Use of Tile in a Construction Contract

Winner - Uniq, Northampton by Kemtile Ltd and Pilkington's Tile Group Plc
The Pilkington's Dorset Hexagon tile used was developed in close collaboration with Kemtile to satisfy a specific need in this demanding market and to suit Kemtile's unique flooring systems and fixing methods.

The project has internal styling fit for a luxury hotel, and is a testimony to how great ceramics can look. The high standard of workmanship and specification of product has resulted in a leisure project which is technically sound, durable and extremely stylish.

Winner - Winchester House by Taylor's Etc
Winchester House is a perfect example of a project where tiles have been used to offer not only a hardwearing surface but, more importantly, an interior design element that introduces pattern, colour and texture to the internal design scheme.

Best Use of Tile by an Architect or Designer

Winner - Peter Mark Style Club, Dublin by Douglas Wallace Architects
The company wanted the imagery of cut hair on the floor as a catwalk style runner to add to the already funky décor. The idea was that in normal salons hair is swept off the floor, in this salon the hair is an integral part of the floor.
