Making tiles and tile related productsWall and floor tiles are used in all sorts of buildings, for example homes, supermarkets and swimming pools. Ceramic tiles are made in factories by pressing and firing a mixture of clay, feldspar and other products in a kiln at a high temperature. After the tile has cooled down it is packaged and sent to tile shops to be sold. Tiles are fixed to walls and floors using adhesive and once the adhesive has dried, the joints are filled with grout. There are factories where tiles, adhesives and grouts are made.People who work in the manufacturing process work with special machinery such as presses and kilns. They can also work in the despatch department operating fork lift trucks. Hours and environmentThe usual working week is 40 hours. InterestsIt is important to have an interest in machines and enjoy using your hands TrainingMost people learn their skills on the job and attend college or a training centre on block release to gain NVQs/SVQs. Some factories will take on apprentices who will work at the factory and attend college during their apprenticeship. Getting inIt is advisable to approach local employers direct. It is also advisable for young people to contact their local Job Centre. Getting onPeople who work on the factory floor can progress to supervisory and managerial roles.
