The Tile Association Awards are the “Oscars” of the wall and floor tile industry. This year TTA received more nominations than ever before across the 21 awards. Listed below are the winners and finalists. They are the best in the industry.

Outstanding Contribution to the Industry sponsored by The Tile Association

Bill Walters.

The remit for this highly coveted award is that the he or she has made a difference to the industry as a whole, not just within their own business environment. Bill Walters is well known to many within the industry and has very definitely made a difference on the technical front. Bill specialised in the performance and installation of ceramic tiles and sits on British, European and International Standards Committees. He is highly regarded as one of the UK’s principal experts in testing methods for ceramic tiles and is a pioneer in testing the slip resistance of floor tiles.

Jonathan Davies of JD Tiling

Jonathan has an NVQ level 3 in wall and floor tiling, a CSCS Gold card and has also won the Medal of Excellence from City & Guilds in advanced computer aided engineering.

The finalists were Peter Breathwick of Wilson & Wylie Contracts Ltd, Alan Milne of R Parker (Wall & Floor Tiling Contractors) Ltd and Neil Rodgerson of W Rodgerson & Sons

Best Use of Tile in a Small Construction Contract sponsored by Lea Ceramiche

Private pool in an old chapel in South Hams by Jonathan Davies, JD Tiling

This project was probably one of the most testing jobs any tiler can be asked to do.

The finalists were Broome & Delancey, Clapham, by Wilson & Wylie Contracts Ltd, Coca Cola, East Kilbride by Kemtile Ltd, St Dunstan’s Church, Woking by Stone & Ceramic Ltd and TS Eliot House by N&C Moderna

Best Use of Tile in a Large Construction Contract sponsored by ULTRA Tile

Centre Court Redevelopment – All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon by Wilson & Wylie Contracts Ltd

The project was completed in June 2008, completely snag free, in plenty of time for the 2008 Championships.

The finalists were BT Liverpool Convention Centre by Pilkington’s Tile Group Plc,
County Square, Ashford by N&C Moderna and 125 Old Broad Street by Harper & Edwards Limited

Best Use of Tile in a Housing Development sponsored by CP Group

”The Forge”, Westferry Road, London by Wilson & Wylie Contracts Ltd

This project, for Glenkerrin Homes, comprised of installing wall and floor tiles to the bathrooms, en-suites and kitchens in 128 flats.

The finalists were Dalston Square, East London by Pilkington’s Tile Group and The Hat Factory, Victoria Street St Albans by AG Ceramics Ltd

Best Technical Use of Tile in a Construction Contract sponsored by Schlüter-Systems

Uniq, Northampton by Kemtile Ltd and Plkington’s Tile Group Plc

The Pilkington’s Dorset Hexagon tile used was developed in close collaboration with Kemtile to satisfy a specific need in this demanding market.

The finalists were Centre Court Redevelopment – All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon by Wilson & Wylie Contracts Ltd, Coca Cola, East Kilbride by Kemtile Ltd and County Square, Ashford by N&C Moderna

Best Use of Tile within the Leisure Industry sponsored by Mapei UK Ltd

Lions Quay, Oswestry by Craven Dunnill & Co. Ltd.

The project has internal styling fit for a luxury hotel, and is a testimony to how great ceramics can look.

The finalists were Centre Court Redevelopment – All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon by Wilson & Wylie Contracts Ltd, The Arcade, Villa Marina Complex, Douglas, Isle of Man by Tiles UK Ltd and Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, Solihull by Birmingham Tile & Mosaic.

Best Use of Tile in a Domestic Environment sponsored by Bathroom & Kitchen Update

Winchester House by Taylor’s Etc.

Winchester House is a perfect example of a project where tiles have been used to enhance the internal design scheme.

The finalists were Evesham Private Pool by Craven Dunnill & Co. Ltd. , South Yorkshire family bathroom by CP Group and Welwynbury, Farndon by Studio Ceramics Ltd

Best Use of Tile by an Architect or Designer sponsored by Johnson Tiles

Peter Mark Style Club, Dublin by Douglas Wallace Architects

The idea was that in normal salons hair is swept off the floor, in this salon the hair is an integral part of the floor.

The finalists were Lions Quay by DW Dulson, Principles by Pepa Retail Design and The Braid Museum by Consarc

Excellence in Tile Industry Marketing sponsored by TAYLIST MEDIA

This marketing campaign included nationwide press and PR campaigns, point of sale, direct mailings and a nationwide road show with product demonstrations.
