The Tile Association

TTA Live From WorldSkills 2011

WorldSkills 2011 is now underway at ExCel London, and the presence of the tiling industry is being felt.

The first day of the event saw over a thousand people try their hand at tiling in The Tile Association’s ‘Have a Go’ area. Students from colleges, secondary and primary schools along with individuals took up the challenge of tiling the Union Flag – with the area proving to be amongst the most popular at the event.

Day Two saw the crowds flock in their thousands once again. With the ‘Have a Go’ area continuing to prove popular, visitors were also given a demonstration on tiling as students from Salford City College gave a demonstration on wall tiling in the ‘Showcasing Skills’ section.

However focus has also been fixed firmly on Team UK representative Ian McMahon. The Northern Irish tiler, a student of North West Regional College, is looking to add WorldSkills gold to his three NI Skillbuild gold medals and has progressed steadily on Day 1 and 2. Speaking to TTA earlier this week Ian expressed confidence in the possibility of taking home a medal, and to those watching events unfold here at ExCel London it seems the prospect of a UK winner on home soil is a real possibility.

Regardless of the final outcome what is certain is that both Ian McMahon and The Tile Association are inspiring the next generation of tilers here at WorldSkills, and with the support of TTA members the UK tile industry will continue to go from strength to strength.
