In December 2003 I completed a part-time Wall and Floor tiling course at South West College, Omagh. Since doing this course I have kept myself up to date with the latest tiling trends. Following the completion of my course I noticed the quality of tiling in many premises was poor, from the fitting of tile trim, tile layouts, to grouting, and I wondered why customers found this acceptable. I believed if the tiling standards improved the customers would always prefer better quality if it could be done at a competitive price.
I enjoy what I do, and job satisfaction is extremely important to me. At the end of every project, I find it satisfying to see the finished job, looking right, done right and made to last.
In August 2005 I began trading as Davidson Tiling and have been a full-time tile fixer from this date until today. I focus on clients that appreciate quality. As we are all aware recession hit in 2008 – I believe I was able to remain in business through this period due to my reputation for high quality workmanship.
My work includes tiling all types of:
- Mosaic and large format ceramic and porcelain tiles.
- Glass Tiles
- Natural Stone – Marble, Travertine, Terracotta, Slate, Limestone, Granite, Sandstone, and Quartz.
Tile fixing is not just about putting tiles on a wall or floor, it includes so much more. When I am contacted about possible work, I go to the premises and survey the job. After agreeing a specification with the client, I draw up a thorough quotation. This is important as it ensures that I have a full understanding of what the client wants, and that the client knows exactly what to expect from me. Attention to every detail is central to a successful outcome for both the client and myself.
In January 2015 I had the opportunity to volunteer my tiling services in a remote arid region in Eastern Kenya. Despite the hot temperatures and limited materials I was able to tile the floors of a unit used to care for abandoned babies under the auspices of Friends of Africa Missionary Endeavour (FAME).
Other tiling related work that I undertake includes:
Wetrooms: Floor tiles laid to falls in floors, or using mosaic. I am experienced in fitting wet trays and channel drains.
Electric Floor Heating: Have supplied and fitted many floor heating jobs, almost always using insulated backer board. As a precaution during cable mat fitting and tiling work an Alarm is in place which will sound and flash to alert, if a cable has been damaged, rather than causing a costly repair. To date we haven’t had any problems.
Floor Tanking: Mostly using ‘Impey Water Guard’. A must on all wetrooms.
Wall tanking: Approx 60% of customers want their shower tanked.
Bespoke Mirrors: To fit within wall tile layouts as required. Can also include Mirror Heaters/ De-misters.
Floor Levelling Service: To ensure a finish with minimal lippage on large format tiles, we adjusted floor levels (with levelling compounds) prior to tiling.
Creating built in shelves and seating in showers: Using a recessed marine plywood wall or concrete block built structure for tiling on.
Other connected trades and services: As required we have completed joinery work in preparation for tiling; door heights fixed, skirting board fitted, plastering preparation work provided. Minor plumbing in Bathrooms.
