The construction of new swimming pools and a changing village at Eston Leisure Centre has been completed with a Mapei waterproofing and tiling system. The pool complex project, in Teesside, features a new 25m competition swimming pool, learner pool, shower areas and changing rooms. The Mapei installation was carried out by Plunkett Tiling for main contractor, Willmott Dixon.
Accessible for all, the new Eston pool complex is managed by award-winning operator, Everyone Active. It features a 6-lane, 25-metre pool, an 11m x 7m learner pool with sensory lights, a 150-seat spectator gallery and changing areas. Bright, modern and welcoming, the new complex incorporates many sustainable features such as solar panels, air source heat pumps and increased wall insulation. The Mapei specification included products with very low VOC formulations certified by EMICODE® EC1PLUS , for a safe installation environment, and with CO2 offset in the entire life cycle.* The complex replaces a previous facility, which was last open to the public in 2020.
During the installation’s first phase, surfaces were repaired and levelled using Eporip solvent-free adhesive, Mapemortar HB R3 shrinkage compensated repair mortar, Planitop 330 fast smoothing mortar and Planitop 200 water-repellent cementitious skimming mortar. The comprehensive waterproofing specification spanned mortars to membranes and included Planiseal 88 waterproofing osmotic cementitious mortar, Mapecoat I 24 epoxy anti-acid coating, Mapelastic Turbo quick-drying elastic cementitious waterproofing mortar and Mapelastic flexible cementitious mortar. Mapenet 150 alkali-resistant glass fibre mesh was incorporated into mortar and Mapeband Easy rubber tape was used to create watertight joints. Mapeguard WP System alkali-resistant waterproofing and anti-fracture membrane was bonded with Mapeguard WP elastic cementitious adhesive and Mapeguard ST waterproofing tape was used to seal angles and joints.
A variety of tiles were specified throughout the complex, including Buchtal specialist tiles to the pools, and Pavigrés wall and floor tiles to the changing and pool surround areas, all supplied from Spectile.
Two cementitious adhesives were used to fix the tiles – Adesilex P9 and Keraquick S1. The installed was then finished with two grouts: Kerapoxy Easy Design epoxy grout and Ultracolor Plus grout.
