The TTA has urged tile retail outlets to be on their guard after a number fell victim to fraudsters using stolen bank cards to order large quantities of tiles.
The fraud usually follows this pattern:
- The fraudster calls and asks for plain white/black/beige tiles in 60×30 or 60×60 and asks if you have them in stock
- They don’t care what the tile looks like and need around 80-100 square metres within the next two days
- They want to pay over the phone by card and have the tiles delivered or collected ASAP.
More often than not they will enlist a courier company to collect unknowingly, or have the tile company deliver to a kerbside address, garages or the like. An actual property will not be specified. They need a fast turnaround as they are using stolen cards.
The Tile Association has urged all businesses to remain vigilant, and to consider that any such requests are paid for in cash, in full, when they are ordered.
